What are the risks of GERD?

Chronic GERD, if untreated, can lead to serious damage. Possible complications include esophageal inflammation (esophagitis), ulcers or bleeding, or the development of asthma. Untreated esophageal inflammation can lead to a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett’s esophagus.
